How to Merge PDF Files (Free, on Any Device)

Updated 25 October 2026

Combining several PDFs into a single file is one of the most common document jobs there is: sending one attachment instead of five, putting scanned pages back together, or bundling a contract with its appendices. Here are the fastest ways to do it on every kind of device.

The quickest way: in your browser

This works the same on every device, including work computers where you can't install software.

  1. Open PDF-M.
  2. Tap Choose PDF files and select all the PDFs you want to combine (or drag them onto the page).
  3. Drag the files into the order you want. Each one shows its page count so you can check nothing is missing.
  4. Press Merge PDFs, then Download PDF.

Because PDF-M merges files inside your browser, your documents are never uploaded anywhere. That makes it suitable for payslips, contracts and medical letters, and it's quick even for large files because there's no upload wait.

On a Mac: Preview or Finder

macOS can merge PDFs without extra software:

  • Finder: select the PDFs, right-click, choose Quick Actions › Create PDF. Files are combined in the order they're sorted in Finder.
  • Preview: open the first PDF, choose View › Thumbnails, then drag the other PDFs into the thumbnail sidebar where you want them. Save with File › Export as PDF.

There's a full walkthrough in our Mac guide.

On Windows

Windows doesn't include a built-in way to merge PDF files. "Microsoft Print to PDF" can only print one document at a time, so it can't combine them. The simplest option is a browser-based tool — see how to merge PDFs on Windows.

On iPhone and iPad

The Files app can combine PDFs: select the files, tap the More (…) button, then Create PDF. Our iPhone guide covers how to control the page order, which the Files app doesn't make obvious.

On Android and Chromebook

Neither has a built-in merge feature. Open PDF-M in Chrome, choose your files from local storage or Google Drive, and the merged PDF will save to your Downloads folder.

Tips for a clean result

  • Check the order before merging. It's much easier to drag files in a list than to rearrange pages afterwards.
  • Rename the output. Give the merged file a clear name, such as 2026-tax-return-documents.pdf.
  • Password-protected files need unlocking first. Open them with the password, then save or print a copy without protection.
  • Keep your originals until you've checked the merged file.
