How to Merge PDF Files on Android (Free, No App Needed)
You can merge PDF files on Android by opening a browser-based tool such as PDF-M in Chrome, adding your files, putting them in order and downloading the combined PDF. Android has no built-in PDF merge feature, so the other route is a dedicated PDF app from Google Play.
This guide covers both, plus what to do if something goes wrong.
The quickest way: merge in your browser
This method needs no installation, and it works on most phones and tablets. PDF-M runs inside your browser and merges the files on your device. They are not uploaded to a server, which is handy for payslips, contracts or ID scans. If you want to know more about what happens when files do get uploaded elsewhere, see Is It Safe to Merge PDFs Online?
Step by step
- Open Chrome (or your usual browser) and go to pdf-m.com.
- Tap Choose PDF files. Android will open its file picker.
- Choose the PDFs you want to combine. You can usually select several at once by pressing and holding the first file, then tapping the others. If the picker only lets you choose one at a time, just add them one after another.
- Check the order of the files on screen. Each file shows its page count. Use the ↑ and ↓ buttons to move a file up or down, or ✕ to remove one. To add files from another folder, tap + Add more.
- Tap Merge PDFs.
- Tap Download PDF. You can type a name for the file first in the File name box.
Chrome normally saves downloads to your Downloads folder. To find the file, open the Files app (often called Files by Google) and look in Downloads. You can also open the downloads list from Chrome's menu.
Option two: use a PDF app from Google Play
If you merge PDFs often, or want to work offline in an app, a dedicated PDF app may suit you better. Many apps offer a merge or combine function, and the names vary. Some are free with adverts, some limit the free version, and some, including a few well-known ones, put combining files behind a paid plan.
The general process is similar across apps:
- Install a PDF app from Google Play. Check the developer name, reviews and the permissions it asks for.
- Open the app and look for an option such as Merge, Combine or Organise pages. It is often in a tools menu rather than on the main screen.
- Select the PDFs you want from your phone's storage.
- Arrange them in the order you want.
- Confirm, then save the new file. Make sure you know which folder it goes to.
Before you start, read what the free version allows. Some add watermarks to the finished file, which you would not want on a document you are about to send.
If your pages are photos or scans
Photos of documents are usually JPG or PNG images, not PDFs, so a PDF merger can't combine them yet. You need to turn them into a PDF first.
The Google Drive app has a scan feature that can capture several pages and save them as a single PDF. Many phone camera and document-scanning apps can do the same. Once you have a PDF, you can merge it with others using either method above.
Tips for a clean result
- Rename files before you merge. Names like "01-cover" and "02-invoice" make the order obvious in the file picker.
- Keep the originals. Merging creates a new file and does not change your source PDFs, but it is still good practice to keep them until you have checked the result.
- Scroll through the merged file. Check the page order, orientation and page count before you send it.
- Mind the file size. Combining large scans can produce a file too big for email. If that happens, share it through a cloud storage link instead.
- Use a different device if you prefer. The same approach works elsewhere. See How to Merge PDF Files (Free, on Any Device) for a general overview, or How to Merge PDFs on iPhone and iPad if you are helping someone with an Apple device.
Troubleshooting
I can't see my PDF in the file picker
The file may be in an app's private storage, such as an email attachment you've only previewed. Save it to your phone first, using the download or save option in the email or messaging app. Then look for it in the picker under Downloads or another folder. If it's in Google Drive, you may need to open the picker's side menu and choose Drive, or download it to your phone first.
The file won't merge
A password-protected PDF often can't be combined until it is unlocked. Open it with the password and save an unprotected copy if you have permission to do so. A damaged file can also cause problems, so try opening it in a PDF viewer to check it works.
The browser is slow or freezes
Very large PDFs need memory, and older phones can struggle. Close other apps and tabs, merge fewer files at a time, or merge in smaller batches and then combine the results.
I can't find the merged file
Open the Files app and check Downloads. You can also search for ".pdf" or look at the most recent files. If you used an app, check the save location it offered.
Bookmarks, links or form fields have changed
Merging can sometimes affect interactive features like fillable forms or bookmarks. If these matter, check the result carefully. For forms, it is often better to complete and flatten them before merging.
Which method should you choose?
For a one-off job, a browser tool is usually the fastest route because there is nothing to install or sign up for. If you handle PDFs all the time, or need extra editing tools, a trusted app may be worth the download. Whichever you choose, check the finished file before you send it.
